photostudio joy & sorrow

Artist Madelinde Hageman collaborates with underage refugees from the AZC Groningen to design the photo studio Joy & Sorrow. The youth conceive and create sets and props for the studio in a series of workshops. In this photo studio, the young people then take portraits of each other and the audience at the Blikopener Festival.

Joy & Sorrow is an artistic exploration through which Madelinde, together with the youth, expresses issues related to mental health. It is part of "Language for Loneliness," an initiative aiming to find new ways to address loneliness. The design of Joy & Sorrow is based on questions such as: What activities, environments, and people make you feel happy and joyful? And what does the darker side of mental health look like? These underage youth have all fled to the Netherlands without their families, which in itself is a tremendous challenge.
